Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that Christian Eriksen could extend his Tottenham Hotspur contract, per The Independent.
The Denmark international’s current deal expires at the end of next season.
What’s the word?
Eriksen continues to be linked with a move away from Spurs, with the club wary of the possibility of him running down his deal and leaving on a free at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
Indeed, the Independent reported in January that contact between Spurs and Real Madrid had been initiated, with Real hopeful of securing a deal for a fee of around £100million.
That deal would break Spurs’ record for revenue received from a single transfer, eclipsing the £85m Real paid for Gareth Bale.
Pochettino, though, says that Eriksen, who scored the winner in a vital 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, is “open” to the possibility of signing a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“I think I was clear a few months ago,” Pochettino said.
“It is a situation that is a very special situation, Christian is a special person, I think we are all special, different and we need to understand that.
“The timing for him or for the club to be agreeing something are maybe different to another player.
“I hope and I wish Christian can be with us in the future but I think Christian and us we are so open to talk and we will see what happens.
“I think it is so close to the end of the season, a lot of time to talk after and I think the most important thing now, not only for him, is for all the players to be focused and try to achieve the things we want.
“We have a lot of big things ahead and we need to be focused only to try and recover, train and compete.”
More trouble than it’s worth
Eriksen isn’t worth this much to Spurs.
He has endured a difficult season that has only been pockmarked by rare moments of quality, as evidenced by his display against Brighton.
In that game, he regularly gave the ball away but cloaked it by scoring a superb winner.
If Real come calling with a bid of £100m, Spurs should absolutely cash in.
Similarly, if Eriksen is not willing to stay, then let him stew and await an offer.
Pochettino is right to claim that “we have a lot of big things ahead” – Spurs have to play in a Champions League semi-final, after all.
Being distracted by Eriksen’s future is not beneficial to anyone.
